Start of Internships

Good Morning,

So today at uni we had a lecture about our next steps within the second half of second year for all the people who had passed the first half.

I really enjoyed this mornings lecture which started at 8 and had Asos, Topshop (Arcadia), Urban Outfitters and a few freelance stylists that come in to talk to us about what they did after they graduated from uni. They all had one thing in common, they all started off by doing internships. This is phase two of the second year we have a choice; you could either go abroad to Australia, Amsterdam, Paris or Milan, or you simply secure an internship or you could complete a self based project for three months. It seemed so short the time you need to to an internship as other places I have seen recruiting for interns have been either a year or six months.

However, we had one of my tutors come in and speak about her career after she graduated 7 years ago. She started off interning for Puma which sound absolutely amazing, she worked on a project for the Box Park store and it sounded like something i would like to do when i leave uni. She worked to briefs, conducted meetings with professionals, built relationships with such a variety of people and it sounded great.

Now that I have decided that although I have qualifications and knowledge within working on the Adobe suit and enjoy being creative I have steered away from going down the Graphic Design career pathway. I want to do marketing. I feel my personality really fits; I am outgoing, enjoy meeting new people, working to briefs and most importantly be able to talk about something I love, if given the opportunity to work within a company.

I then came away with this mornings lecture excited to get into the big wide world and to start applying for internships. As my part time job i work for the Arcadia Group at Topman and i am transferring to a Burton Menswear shop so ideally i would like an internship that i can relate to which what i enjoy the most in menswear fashion. I think the reason behind this is because I enjoy menswear fashion you can be yourself and no-one will judge you the way you look as men are more laid back that women when it comes to fashion. I also think it is because I have been brought up surround by boys after all I have 4 step brothers and one blood brother, I believe this impact has made me select my future career goal to be within a mens fashion line.

I am going back up to uni after lunch and start to research many companies I would like to intern for and sign up to Fashion GPS and Fashion Workie to see if i can get many contacts.
